Joint Research

International Joint Research and Experiments

Japan, Korea and Singapore established the working team to promote the APII Test-bed Project in the meeting of APEC (Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation) in July 1996.

ESeptember 1997: 12 Objectives agreed for Japan-Korea Joint Researches.
EFebruary 1998: 9 objectives agreed for Japan-Singapore Joint Researches.

Those joint experiments was carried out through March 2000 with Korea and March 2001 with Singapore.

The network (Network Configuraiton of the APII Experiments (-2001)) to support these joint experiments had been completed in October 1997.

After finishing the first stage in Jan. 2001, 8Mbps link between Japan and Korea was kept for joint researches. From March 2003, 1Gbps class submarine cable between Kita-kyusyu and Busan ia opened for further joint experiments. Moreover, AI3 satellite Internet and APEC IPv6 Testbed project are also our main project. According this situation, new APII netork (2003-)is constructed.

Information Infrastructure in Asia-Pacific Region

The network facilities in Asia-Pacific region has been expanding rapidly increasing its size by 9 times over the past.

As to the traffic between Japan and APEC countries, it accounts for 76% currently and the traffic has a tendency to grow to the areas other than U.S.A..

Meanwhile, the number of internet host computers in Asia-Pacific region accounts for only 15% of that of all over the world, while the U.S. share is approximately 60%.

Furthermore, the transmission rate of the Internet backbone networks between Japan-U.S. is about 800Mbps while Japan-Asia transmission remains at 38Mbps.

This shows that further improvement is necessary for an effective use of the info-communication network.

The related countries will cooperate on the construction of an efficient information infrastructure which will improve the socio-economic status in the Asia-Pacific region, by promoting the following projects:

From April 2003, Asia Broad Band Project including the APII project is launched for strong support of development of Information Infrastructure.
